Suddenly, this week, I can no longer use my snippets because Gmail says "Press / for Help me write". It's terrible, and I'm very annoyed. Does anyone know how to disable this?
Hi Josh,
Yikes, that sounds annoying!
If you are on Google Workspace, your administrator can disable Gemini features in Gmail here:
We use Google Workspace but had the Gmail Gemini stuff off as they are pretty distracting (their email summary feature...
). I turned them on to test this out. I am seeing a different shortcut prompt, and everything works fine in Text Blaze:
It sounds like they might be A/B testing this. Can you send me a screenshot of what you see in the Gmail message and what happens when you try to type your prompt?
I assume if you change your shortcut to use something else instead of a slash (some users use "." or ",") everything works fine? Also, I assume inserting from the context menu or assistant works fine?
Looks like the screenshot below. You either have to change your snippet shortcuts to backslashes (or whatever other special character you prefer) or alternatively you can hold down the delete key while typing your snippet shortcut that starts with a / and they will still work. Unfortunately they don't let you turn off Gemini features on a granular level, it's all or nothing and my org is requiring some of them.
On a related note, Gemini has gotten very good at copying my snippets wholesale and even entering the scripted variables correctly. Which also tells me that the snippets I worked so hard on are also available to the general Gemini using populace with the correct prompting...
Thanks, I've got the slash version of Gmail enabled now for testing this.
It looks like their Gmail's slash logic is active only when you have a blank email. So if you type a space or something, it will go away, and then you can use your shortcut that starts with a slash.
Less than ideal, I know. We'll explore if there is something else you can do on it.
Copy - yeah, I have a ton of responses that start from a fresh email - I guess I'll try "SPACE" first or something... It's really an awful feature if you can't turn it off (or modify it)... This forced AI stuff is atrocious.
