Copy of snippet "HOMA-IR Calc"

Hello, please calculate HOMA-IR and ensure you use the correct units (SI) and include an interpretation.

Please note your values for fasting glucose and fasting insulin will be given in mmol/L (glucose) and pmol/L (insulin).

Here is the formula you will need to use for the HOMA-IR. An error here is unacceptable.

The HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) formula using fasting glucose in mmol/L and fasting insulin in pmol/L.

Use MDCalc's standard formula:
Convert to US units first (insulin pmol/L ÷ 6 = uIU/mL, glucose mmol/L × 18 = mg/dL),
then calculate: (Fasting insulin in uIU/mL × Fasting glucose in mg/dL) ÷ 405

Interpretation (General Guidelines):

  • <1.0: Very insulin sensitive
  • 1.0–2.0: Normal
  • 2.0–2.9: Early insulin resistance
  • ≥3.0: Significant insulin resistance
Present the results as “HOMA-IR: [insert HOMA-IR as calculated] corresponding to [insert interpretation]”
