A portable computer is required to run the recommended assistive technology and ensure [NAME_FIRST]'s access to digital resources and personalised assistive tools wherever the device is used. {formtoggle: name=[£200 Contribution ?]; default=yes}{endformtoggle}{if: `[£200 Contribution ?]`} For students funded through Student Finance England (SFE), any recommended computers are only part-funded by DSA, requiring a contribution of £200 towards the cost. This policy reflects the expectation that all students need a computer for their studies, so the first £200 is considered a standard cost that students would incur regardless of disability. Students funded through Student Finance Wales (SFW) are not currently required to make this contribution, as the full cost of the computer is covered under their funding arrangements. {else}It was made clear that for student funded through Student Finance England (SFE), recommended computers are only part-funded by the DSA, and the student may be required to pay a contribution of £200. Because a contribution has already been made towards a previous computer, an additional contribution may not be required, based on the current DSA guidelines - 'Where a student has already contributed £200 towards the cost of a computer, but are then required to acquire an additional computer (if, for example, the original computer has ceased to meet the needs of the student due to breakage or a disability related need) the student may be entitled to the entirety of the cost for an additional computer.'{endif}
Once the computer recommendation is approved, it is possible to request an upgrade to a higher specification or a different make or model. This is allowed as long as the chosen computer remains compatible with all other recommended software and equipment. Any additional costs resulting from the upgrade will need to be covered independently.
Access to Microsoft Office 365 is provided as part of the university’s site licence. This includes both the online and downloadable versions of the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive). Installation of the English Version (free) is therefore recommended to enable activation of the full student licence without difficulty. This ensures ease of access to assistive software without delay.
Microsoft Windows Defender is integrated into the Microsoft Windows operating system and does not require a separate installation.
