Seems obvious, but I have to ask, is there any way to make this work in the search bar? If not does anyone know an extension that replaces in search bar? That is where it would REALLY be useful.

Yes, you can do that by using Text Blaze Chrome search provider which works by typing tb followed by Space or Tab key then the shortcut of the snippet you want to insert and press Enter/Return. By URL bar we mean the bar at the top of your browser window.
