Smart (curly) quotation marks

Newbie here, using TB on a Chromebook.

Could someone please advise me on the most efficient way to use TB to replace straight quotes ("x" and 'x') with curly ones (“x” and ‘x’)?

Google Docs can do this natively, but I want to be able to use curly quotes anywhere. (The Smart Quotes chrome extension used to do this, but it has been disabled, along with any other extension that did this.)

Right now I have each of those punctuation marks triggered by a separate one character Anywhere trigger (/+, for “ and so on). It is still pretty cumbersome. Is there any functionality in TB (basic or pro) that can do an automatic substitution for certain characters as you type?

TIA in advance for any tips!

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I think you may already have the best approach. You can't map " directly as you don't know if it should be left-quote or a right-quote.

One thing you might want to look at is you don't have to start your snippets with "/". So maybe something like ", (for left, , is below the < key) and ". (for right) might be more natural?

Sorry, didn’t see your reply earlier! For some reason, I didn’t even think of using another trigger character than /. So, now I have open double quotes mapped to [[ and close to ]]. Thanks for the tip!

BTW, I noticed that in these text boxes used in this forum, “straight” quotes are automatically replaced with “curly” ones. I assume there is no easy way to mimic that behavior on any website that accepts text input? I swear the Smart Quotes extension used to do this, but then I guess Google removed whatever made that possible. (It was still working until I inadvertently turned it off and it would no longer function when I turned it on. I tried re-installing it, and that’s when I discovered it was no longer supported.)
